History of the flag

The current flag of Tuvalu was adopted in 1978 after separating from the Gilbert Islands (which became Kiribati) in 1976.

In 1995, the flag was changed but reinstated in 1997.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The Union Jack recalls the country’s membership in the Commonwealth.

  • Turquoise blue represents the Pacific Ocean. The stars symbolize the geographical positions of the nine islands that make up Tuvalu.
