History of the flag

This flag appeared at the 1990 Asian Games, when negotiations were held to form a unified team of the two Koreas under a common banner.

Although they were unsuccessful, the unification flag was designed for the occasion.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The silhouette of the peninsula represents the whole of Korea, without borders, affirming territorial and historical unity.

  • The white background reflects the purity, peace and shared cultural tradition of the region.

  • Blue symbolizes hope, unity and harmony between North and South.
