History of the flag

Uruguay has the only flag in the world with three official variants. The flag featuring the sun remains the most commonly used.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • Borrowed from the Argentine flag, the ‘Sun of May’ symbolizes the country’s revolution and independence.

  • The nine white and blue stripes represent the nine political parties at the time of Uruguay’s formation (1825–1830). The colors refer to the sky.
