History of the flag

‘Y Ddraig Goch ' or ‘Red Dragon’ is the name of the Welsh flag, adopted in 1959.

It links the mythological Welsh dragon with the Tudor colors (green and white stripes).

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • According to Arthurian legend, Merlin had a vision of a red dragon victorious over the invading Saxons.

  • Green and white represent the House of Tudor, a Welsh dynasty from the XIIIth to the XVIIth century. Green also represents the leek, the national symbol.
