History of the flag

Adopted in 1945, the flag of Yugoslavia symbolizes the unity of the South Slavs under a socialist regime.

It was inspired by Panslavism, a political system that sought to group all Slavic peoples under the authority of Russia.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • A symbol of socialism, the star also represents the five main peoples : Serbs, Croats, Macedonians, Slovenes and Montenegrins.

  • Blue represents freedom and the sky.

  • White embodies fraternity and peace.

  • Red symbolizes blood shed for the fatherland.
