The flag of Kiribati is as unique as the archipelago it represents .
Adopted at independence in 1979 , it features an omnipresent nature : the sun, the sea and the bird .

At the top of the flag, a blazing yellow sun rises against a red background.
It symbolizes:

  • The nation's new hope after colonization

  • The days start early in this region of the globe (Kiribati is the first country to enter each new day ๐ŸŒโฐ)

  • The Gilbert Islands (the main part of the country), represented by the 17 rays of the sun

A sun that illuminates a scattered, yet united archipelago.

Just beneath the blazing sun, there are three wavy bands โ€“ blue, white, blue.
They are not there by chance: they represent the Pacific Ocean , which surrounds and shapes life in Kiribati.

  • The first blue wave evokes the immensity of the sea , which connects all the islands

  • The central white wave symbolizes foam , life , and perpetual motion.

  • The last blue wave embodies the continuous waves , like a natural rhythm around the archipelago

But these waves are also a map. They represent the nation's three major island groups :
Gilbert, Phoenix and Line Islands.

At the top of the flag, above the sun, soars a golden frigatebird ๐Ÿ•Š โ€“ a majestic and agile seabird.
It represents:

  • Freedom , power , mastery of the skies

  • The culture of navigation and the spiritual connection with the sea

The bird flies towards the future , balanced between sky and sea.
