The flag of Kiribati

For this twelfth episode, let's head to the heart of Oceania:

Destination Kiribati!

The flag of Kiribati is as unique as the archipelago it represents.
Adopted at independence in 1979, it depicts an ever-present nature: the sun, the sea, and the bird.
A true moving painting, both graphic and poetic.

🌅 A Golden Sun on the Horizon

At the top of the flag, a flaming yellow sun rises against a red background.
It symbolizes:

  • The new hope of the nation after colonization

  • The early mornings in this region of the globe (Kiribati is the first country to enter each new day 🌍⏰)

  • The Gilbert Islands (the main part of the country), represented by the 17 sun rays

A sun that illuminates a dispersed, yet united, archipelago.

🌊 Three Waves for Three Worlds

Just below the flaming sun, there are three wavy bands – blue, white, blue.
They are not there by chance: they represent the Pacific Ocean, which surrounds and shapes life in Kiribati.

  • The first blue wave evokes the immensity of the sea, which connects all the islands

  • The central white wave symbolizes the foam, life, perpetual motion

  • The last blue wave embodies the continuous waves, like a natural rhythm around the archipelago

But these waves are also a map. They represent the three major island groups of the nation:
Gilbert, Phoenix, and Line Islands.

🕊 A Bird in Flight: Freedom

At the top of the flag, above the sun, soars a golden frigatebird 🕊 – a majestic and agile seabird.
It represents:

  • Freedom, power, mastery of the air

  • The culture of navigation and the spiritual connection with the sea

The bird flies towards the future, balanced between sky and sea.

🎨 The Meaning of the Colors:

🔴 Red: The sky at dawn, life, energy

🟡 Yellow: The sun, hope, warmth

🔵 Blue: The ever-present Pacific Ocean

⚪ White: The foam, clarity, purity

🕊 Golden Frigatebird: Freedom, power, maritime culture
