The flag of South Korea
For this fifth episode, let's travel to the heart of Asia:
Off to South Korea!

The flag of South Korea, called Taegeukgi (태극기) , is a highly symbolic flag that draws its roots from Eastern philosophy .
It represents the harmony of forces , the balance of the world , and Korean cultural identity .

☯️ A circle in the center: the Taegeuk
📍 The center of the flag is occupied by a red and blue circle divided into two parts , called Taegeuk .
-
🔴 Red (yang): active force, the sky, light, warmth
-
🔵 Blue (yin): passive force, earth, shadow, cold
Together they form a balanced dualism , much like yin and yang.
The world can only exist through the union of opposites .
🔲 The four trigrams: the fundamental forces
Around the circle are 4 black trigrams (괘) from the Yi King , a classic text of Chinese philosophy.
Each trigram represents a fundamental natural force :
☰ = Geon (건): The sky / justice
☷ = Gon (곤): Earth / Receptivity
☵ = Gam (감): Water / Wisdom
☲ = Ri (리): Fire / Light
🎨 The meaning of colors:
🔴 Red: Yang = active energy, sky
🔵 Blue: Yin = receptive energy, earth
⚫️ Black: Natural balances (trigrams)
⚪️ White: Purity, peace, tradition
