The flag of Madagascar

For this sixteenth episode, let's head to the Indian Ocean:
Destination Madagascar 🇲🇬!

The flag of Madagascar is simple, elegant, and deeply symbolic.
Adopted in 1958, on the eve of official independence in 1960, it reflects Malagasy history.

A minimalist design, full of meaning.

🤍 A vertical white stripe: purity and roots:

On the left of the flag, a vertical white stripe.

It symbolizes:

  • Purity

  • Loyalty

  • Peace

  • Traditional values of the Malagasy people

The white also evokes the Merina ethnic group, historically dominant in the central highlands.

🔴 Red: heritage and sovereignty:

In the upper right, a deep red.

It represents:

  • Sovereignty

  • Courage

  • The struggle for independence

  • The heritage of the Merina kingdom (whose colors are white and red)

Red was already present in the ancient Malagasy royal emblems.
It reminds us that Madagascar had a strong history before French colonization.

🟢 Green: land and hope:

In the lower right, green brings balance and modernity.

It symbolizes:

  • Agriculture (pillar of the economy)

  • Lush nature

  • Iconic rice paddies

  • Hope and the future

Madagascar is globally renowned for its unique biodiversity—a separate island, with flora and fauna found nowhere else.

🌍 A flag focused on identity:

Unlike other highly narrative flags, Madagascar's opts for simplicity.
Three colors, three strengths:

  • Tradition

  • Sovereignty

  • Nature

A balance between royal past, colonial period, and independent future.

🎨 The meaning of the colors:

🔴 Red: Courage, sovereignty, royal heritage
White: Purity, peace, traditions
🟢 Green: Agriculture, nature, hope
